Prosecutor seeks prison term for Hasan Cemal for "terrorism propaganda"
The prosecutor submitted his final opinion, requesting that Hasan Cemal be convicted of “making propaganda for a terrorist organization”
P24’s Founding President and T24 columnist Hasan Cemal on 16 April appeared in the second hearing of his trial on the charge of “propaganda” at the 36th High Criminal Court of Istanbul.
Cemal is on trial for a column he wrote on 4 December 2015, titled "Silvan’dan: Bizi acılara, ölümlere o kadar alıştırdılar ki..."(From Silvan: they have groomed us to accept sorrows and deaths).
Hasan Cemal and his lawyer Fikret İlkiz were in attendance a the hearing, monitored by P24.
Submitting his final opinion, the prosecutor requested Cemal to be convicted for the alleged crime of “conducting propaganda for a terrorist organization.”
Previously Cemal had been sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison for his 11 July 2016 article titled “Fehman Hüseyin” but the sentence had been deferred.
Mentioning that ruling, the prosecutor stated that the two trials should be combined and that Cemal should be charged with “systematically disseminating propaganda for a terrorist organization” in this case.
However, reminding that the sentence dated 14 February 2017 has already been upheld, the prosecutor requested the sentence that was given by the Istanbul 22ndHigh Criminal Court to be reduced from the sentence sought in the present case file.
Accepting the request by Cemal and his lawyer for a continuance to prepare their final defense statement, the court adjourned the trial until 7 May.
